Along with their extensive collection of studio outboard gear, Warm Audio’s range also includes a number of effects pedals that recreate some of the most sought-after vintage effects. The latest additions to the range offer the company’s take on another two classics, and each offer a choice of circuits that emulate different revisions of the original designs.
Tube Squealer
First up is the Tube Squealer which, as you may have guessed, is based on the iconic Tube Screamer. It employs a 100% analogue design that offers three selectable voicing modes, covering some of the pedal’s most popular variants in a single unit. An 808 mode delivers the earliest iteration, while TS9 captures the most produced and widely recognised version and TS10 revives an underrated circuit that’s seen a recent rise in popularity among players.
Although it’s been designed to faithfully capture the sound of the designs that inspired it, the new pedal is equipped with some additional features, too. a Mix knob makes it possible for players to blend their clean signal back in with the overdrive, and a pickup-voicing selector allows the pedal to be optimised for either single-coil or hunbucker-equipped guitars. High quality components including RC4558 op-amps, discrete transistors and diodes and premium JFETs are used throughout the signal path.
Throne of Tone
The second of the two releases, the Tone of Throne, draws its inspiration from the Marshall Bluesbreaker and some of its existing recreations. The pedal features a two-sided design that provides users with two distinct voicing options, each of which offer a choice of low- and high-gain level options and three drive modes: Boost, Overdrive and Distortion. Warm Audio say that much like the original amps and the pedals they inspired, the Throne of Tone excels at British-style breakup tones thanks to a symmetrical clipping circuit that captures the feel of valve amps being pushed beyond their clean limits.
Each side of the Throne of Tone features an independent Presence control (500Hz–2.3kHz) as well as the standard Tone knob, while rear-panel send and return jacks make it possible to insert another pedal between the two onboard circuits. There’s also a rear-mounted external voltage doubler (9V–18V) that offers increased headroom, and the pedal features true-bypass switching. The high-quality design employs no fewer than 24 diodes, and opts for premium JRC4580 and TL072 op-amps.
“These are two of the most popular styles of overdrive in guitar history, and we’re excited to add them to the Warm line-up. We maintained the Warm formula of vintage-accurate tone and premium components, but we went a step further to combine some of the greatest iterations of these tones along with feature-rich functionality into each. For the Tube Squealer, we couldn’t limit ourselves to just one of the classic pedal tones so we built the most legendary three into one pedal. Then we added critical controls to make it a must-have on any pedalboard. For the Throne of Tone, we decided to honour the three-knob vintage pedal that inspired a whole wave of boutique recreations, and added a second side plus alternative voicing to deliver the most unobtainable boutique blues OD. With these unique voicing options, plus added features for presence, gain structure and gain amount, you can create dozens of combinations that were previously unavailable in addition to getting the authentic sound of the originals — all in one stompbox!” - Bryce Young, Founder & President, Warm Audio
