Blue take a two-stage approach
Blue Microphones launched a duo of bottle-inspired mics at the AES show in San Francisco at the beginning of October. Called the Bottle Rockets, they’re available in two ‘stages’. Stage One (left) is a solid-state mic that uses transformerless, discrete class-A technology, while Stage Two (right) is a tube mic (again, transformerless) that’s fitted with a “hand-selected” ECC88 vacuum tube.

Both mics are modular, and are compatible with the interchangeable ‘lollipop’ heads offered by Blue and various other manufacturers. They both ship with the cardioid B8 capsule, but additional heads with different tonal characteristics and polar patterns can be purchased, to build a very versatile system.

In the USA, the Stage One costs $899, while the Stage Two, which ships with Blue’s bulky Powerstream power supply, retails for $1999. Both will be in the shops by the end of October. UK prices were unavailable at the time of writing.
