McDSP’s latest offering is based on the algorithms used for their Engineering Emmy Award-winning SA-2 Dialog Processor, and introduces a range of feature that greatly extend its versatility. SA-3 Spectral Processor is equipped with over 1000 processing bands, boasts a programmable bias curve, enhanced control over its spectral processing and more.
As with the SA-2, the new plug-in is said to excel at removing unwanted spectral spikes in dialogue, vocals and many other audio sources, but is capable of tracking and eliminating persistent peaks at almost any frequency. Increasing the value of its Detect parameter will cause the SA-3’s algorithm to intelligently apply its processing bands to suppress unwanted content in the incoming signal. A Monitor button makes it possible to audition the removed signal, and detailed visual feedback is provided on the central display window.
A Bias button makes it possible to influence the frequency range in which processing that takes place, allowing users to focus it onto (or away from) a particular frequency range. With the button engaged, the response can be altered using Scale and Shift controls, with text readouts in the display window appearing when Bias Curve bands are selected. There are also Focus, Range and Density controls, along with Attack and Release parameters, that make it possible to fine-tune the plug-in’s overall processing.
When being used on stereo material, a Pan knob makes it possible to adjust the balance of processing between the left and right channels — or the mid and sides elements of a signal if used in conjunction with the plug-in’s Mid/Side button.
Compatibility
SA-3 Spectral Processor is supported on PCs running Windows 10 or 11, and Macs running macOS 10.13 and above. VST3, AU and AAX Native plug-in versions are available. Authorisation is taken care of by PACE’s iLok system, and the plug-in supports either an iLok 2 or iLok 3 USB dongle or iLok Cloud.
