Universal Audio’s range of Volt interfaces has steadily grown since being introduced in 2021, and includes a selection of desktop units that come in at a lower cost than the company’s flagship Apollo offerings. The latest arrival to the series becomes the first to occupy a rackmount chassis, ups the I/O count significantly, and pairs its eight onboard mic preamps with eight 1176-style compressors.
Designed by the same team behind the Apollo series, the new Volt 876 line-up offers a total of 24 inputs and 28 outputs, employs 32-bit/192kHz A-D and D-A conversion, and comes bundled with a suite of UAD plug-ins and UA’s LUNA DAW software. It boasts a set of eight Vintage preamps — a design inspired by those present in the company’s renowned 610 unit — each of which are joined by an analogue compressor circuit based on the 1176.
Two mic/line inputs are provided on front-panel XLR/TRS combo sockets, with the remaining six located on the rear panel — the front-panel sockets can also be switched to accept Hi-Z instrument signals. a set of rear-panel quarter-inch TRS sockets provide access to the unit’s line-level outputs, and there are two headphone outputs located on the front panel, each with their own dedicated level controls. As for digital I/O, the Volt 876 features two ADAT inputs and outputs, allowing up to three units to be combined to create a 24-channel recording system, as well as making it possible to use the interface as an expander for an Apollo or other ADAT-equipped interface. MIDI I/O is provided on five-pin DIN sockets.
